¿ What is the cost to tryout?
Tryouts are free.
¿ What does the season start and end?
Voluntary practices after July 4. Teams officially start practicing in August with 1st game after labor day. The season spans from September-April, with a few teams completing final games by mid-May. Teams usually attend an early December tournament and break from mid-December if mid-January.
¿ What is Select Soccer?
More practices, more commitment, and league play in Houston competitive leagues. Teams will have at least 2 practice sessions per week + 1 possible technical training session. In addition, players are expected to practice at home at least 3 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes per practice. Game play time may be reduced for excessive absences and training commitment issues. Advanced competition in Houston leagues – South Texas Players League, Eastern District Division 2, HYSA, and State Classic League.
¿ Is there travel outside of Houston for games?
No, except in cases where the your team advances to spring cup finals that could possibly be held outside of Houston.
¿ When will we be notified if accepted or not?
Approximately 7 days after tryouts.
¿ What is the cost to accept?
If you are chosen as a player, you have 48 hours after notification to make your first payment. First payment is $400. Payment plan July 1-$400, August 1- $300, September 1-$300. Total payment is $1400. For 2012 and younger teams fees continue in October-$300, and November $350, for a total of $1,950. All 2012 and younger teams are automatically enrolled in our Pro-Training program that gives you 3 extra training sessions each week all year.
All teams include a licensed paid trainer/coach and can have an assistant parent coach-manager. Included: 2 practices per week + 1 technical session; 2 Tournaments, 2 select uniforms, backpack, 2 practice jerseys (uniforms and practice jerseys for first time players), 12-16 select games, insurance, use of a lighted field, discount for Pro-Training sessions. Cost also includes City park fees, club cost for field maintenance and equipment, administrative fees, and costs for Coaching Director, Technical Director, coaches and trainers.
¿ When are teams announced?
Approximately 1-2 weeks after selection email is sent. For younger groups, usually U8 & U9, the group will practice together in July and early August for further evaluation. Specific team assignment for U8 & U9 may not be completed until September.
¿ What if my players is chosen for a team but not the team we want? Can we get a refund?
Your first payment is not refundable. Additional payments in later months "completed" are also not refundable.
¿ What if there are not enough players to form a 2nd team and we do not make the 1st team?
You will be refunded fully.
¿ What if we have other activities planned during team practice days?
Select soccer is a commitment. Parents must be prepared to make soccer practice a priority and reschedule other activities. Fall practice days/times will be set around July 15 giving you ample time to schedule.
¿ I am currently on a Pearland Soccer Select team. Is my place on the team guaranteed?
Usually yes unless you have received specific communication from club staff. However, the club reserves the right to move any player at any time to an alternate team for various justified reasons, including skill and behavioral issues. All players must attend tryouts. Current players do not need to register but must attend.
¿ Who will coach our team?
All teams include a licensed paid trainer/coach and can have an assistant parent coach-manager. All teams are required to have a least one parent manager who can either serve as assistant coach or manager only.
¿ Who makes player selection?
Director of Coaching, Director of Select Teams, President, Vice President.
¿ Do you allow for parent coaches?
With appropriate license, club mentoring and approval, parents may be allowed to first be assistant coaches (selected by the Board, Director of Coaching, and Director of Select Teams). Criteria is license level, demeanor, and commitment to club coaching training philosophy. All teams are required to have one parent manager.
¿ What league will we play in?
1 of 5: Frontier, State Classic, Players League, Eastern District Division 2 League, or Houston Youth Soccer Association (HYSA). See League Pathway.
¿ What are valid reasons for giving a player less game time?
We aim to give all players as much play time as possible. Discipline is acceptable under STYSA rules for lack of practice attendance, tardiness to game arrival time, poor attitude, unsportsmanlike behavior.
¿ Why do all Division 3 players usually get to play 50% of the game?
South Texas Youth Soccer Rule 6.1.2 states that Division I & 2 teams are allowed to vary player game time. Division 3 (HYSA League) teams must play ALL players 50% on the field (exceptions are only made for injuries and disciplinary reasons). Pearland Soccer will strictly enforce this rule.
¿ Will my player miss out by not playing select?
We believe our recreation league is sufficiently competitive to keep soccer fun and challenging. Your advanced player should avoid burnout. Selective team play can be delayed until a later age, but keep training and enjoying the game so skills continue to improve.
