FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
For those making the transition from Rec to Select soccer, you probably have many questions and concerns. Most common questions are about cost, team placement, and practice times. If you have questions in addition to the ones below, reach out to us.
¿ What is the cost to tryout?
Tryouts are free.
¿ When does the season start and end?
Voluntary trainings after July 4. Teams officially start training in August. The season spans from August-May. Teams usually break from mid-December to mid-January.
¿ What is Select Soccer?
More trainings, more commitment, and league play in Houston competitive leagues. Teams will have at least 2 - 3 training sessions per week. In addition, players are expected to focus on personal development on days away from the training environment. Game play time may be impacted due to excessive absences and training commitment issues. Advanced competition in Houston leagues – South Texas Players League, Eastern District Division 2, HYSA, and State Classic League.
¿ What is the difference between NextUp Academy, Select, Elite, Premier?
Three practices per week, more tournament play, and the highest level of play. This pathway graphic will help explain the details.
¿ What is the difference between Foundation Select and the NextUp Academy?
Foundation is under our Select program. Both NextUp and Foundation teams play in U9-U12 leagues. Foundation has 2 practices per week with Pro-Training sessions for additional training. For example, your team might practice Tuesday and Thursday, and then your team may also attend together a Monday session of Pro-Training. You also have the option of attending Wednesday pro-training as well.
¿ Why do you require a decision so quickly?
Resource planning and team formation. We need to contract with coaches for the full year and assign coaches to teams. Teams can only be formed with firm commitments by payment.
¿ When will we be notified if accepted or not?
Approximately 2-5 days after tryouts.
¿ When are practices?
Practice days will be determined by Mid-July. Times are 5:30-7:00 for the younger teams (U9-U12) and 7:00-8:30 for older teams.
¿ Where will practices be held?
Practices will be at one of 3 locations: Hickory Sports Park, Shadow Creek Sports Park, or Blueridge Soccer Park.
¿ What is the cost to accept?
Cost ranges from $1400 - $2100 per seasonal year depending on team level with payment plan options available. If selected, a player will be given 48 hours after notification to accept and make an initial first payment of $500. A monthly payment plan is available for the remainder.
¿ When are teams announced?
Approximately 5-7 days after selection email is sent. The club reserves the right to make player team changes before and after the season has started. In some cases, a player may be evaluated further in July and August before a final team placement is decided. Note that the Club believes in player development, and at times a player may be asked to play additional games with other teams.
¿ When does training start?
August 1. Training is provided in July.
¿ When does the game season begin?
League games begin in September after labor day. Pearland Soccer will host a Mid-August tournament that all teams will attend.
¿ How many training days per week?
NextUP trains 3 days per week. All other Select teams practice 2 days per week.
¿ How does the Foundational phase defer from the Pro-Training program?
Foundation phase refers to the U9-U12 age group. Teams in this age group are designated as Elite or Select. Pro-Training is an extra Training program available for players on Elite and Select teams and also for players aspiring to join the PSC competitive program.
¿ Do Select players have to pay full price for the Pro-Training program?
Pro Training is included in registration for those players not in the NextUp Academy U8-U12. Teams will have a designated day to attend a Pro-Training session. Players are welcome to attend all 3 days of Pro-Training if there is no conflict with team practices.
¿ Is there any siblings discount available for the competitive program?
Yes, $400 off for the 2nd sibling.
¿ What is the cost per additional tournament after the two free tournaments?
Approximately $50 per player.
¿ What is the cost for the uniform?
$299 and includes 2 jerseys (light & dark), 2 shorts, 2 socks, athletic pants, jacket, 2 practice shirts, and backpack. Uniform style will be used for a minimum of 4 years and only need to be repurchased if your player grows or misplaces the uniform.
¿ How do we purchase the uniform?
A website store will be available for order.
¿ What is the cancellation policy?
It is the policy of the Pearland Soccer Club to refund registration fees only if your player moves more than 30 miles from his/her primary residence prior to the start of the season, or if the player is unable to participate due to a season ending injury/illness as documented by a physician.
No refunds, credits or fee transfers will be allowed for any other reasons. Conflicts with practice schedules are not grounds for refunds. Refund requests due to injury must be made within 2 weeks of injury and must have a physician's note included. There will be no reimbursements for any games or practices cancelled due to weather, acts of God, or forfeits.
¿ What if my players is chosen for a team but not the team we want? Can we get a refund?
All payments made after accepting are non-refundable.
¿ Is there travel outside of Houston for games?
Generally, games are in the Houston and surrounding areas. However, there are the select tournaments in other cities within the state, and some games for teams playing at the highest league levels.
¿ What if we have other activities planned during team training days?
Select soccer is a commitment. Parents must be prepared to make soccer training a priority and reschedule other activities. Fall training days/times will be set around July 15 giving you ample time to schedule.
¿ I am currently on a Pearland Soccer Select team. Is my place on the team guaranteed?
Usually yes unless you have received specific communication from club staff. However, the club reserves the right to move any player at any time to an alternate team for various justified reasons, including skill and behavioral issues.
¿ Who will coach our team?
All teams include a licensed paid trainer/coach and can have an assistant parent coach-manager.
¿ Who makes player selection?
Director of Coaching, Director of Select Teams, President, Vice President, Coaches.
¿ Do you allow for parent coaches?
With appropriate license, club mentoring and approval, parents may be allowed to first be assistant coaches (selected by the Board, Director of Coaching, and Director of Select Teams). Criteria is license level, demeanor, and commitment to club coaching training philosophy. All teams are required to have one parent manager.
¿ What league will we play in?
1 of 5: Frontier, State Classic, Players League, Eastern District Division 2 League, or Houston Youth Soccer Association (HYSA). See League Pathway.
¿ What are valid reasons for giving a player less game time?
We aim to give all players as much play time as possible. Discipline is acceptable under STYSA rules for lack of training attendance, tardiness to game arrival time, poor attitude, unsportsmanlike behavior.
¿ Can the club help my player get ready for the MLS Dynamo Youth Academy ?
YES ! Pearland Soccer is fully committed to helping players develop to their highest potential. Dynamo Academy teams start at U13, and outstanding players will have the opportunity to be evaluated by Dynamo Academy Staff at our Pro-Training Program and at special events held by the Academy.
